Most of this speaks for itself, so follow the links for some strong language, one total numpty and a bevy of pedants.
Giles Coren, trying to be brutally sarcastic, ending up boorish and in doing so demonstrating that skill at humour apparently does not run in families.
The Times sub-editors hit back is some style, although I have to say that the assertion :
…having “Giles Coren is a sanctimonious little twat who needs to get over himself” could be quite costly in T-shirt lettering.
rather seems ot miss that a decent sub would trim it to “Giles Coren is an arse” without any significant loss of meaning.
I especially like Richard Lunt’s response here for bringing an appropriate degree of pedantry to proceedings.
Surely this Giles cannot possibly be the offspring of the truly great humorist Alan?
Is there such a thing as a Kosher milkman?
BTW: 1) Are we to assume, Ian, that your ending the title with ‘than’ (rather than the boringly obvious ‘then’) and without a question mark, probably qualifies as bait for somebody…?
BTW: 2) Oh, and I suppose ‘Lunt’ is a correct spelling?
Er, no that was a consequence of posting very early in the morning. Fixed.
Hmm, methinks that Master Coren needs a bit more stress in his life if he lies awake all night worrying about a missing ‘a’. As a friend of mine said ‘Oh to have The Times miss an a out of something I’ve written’.
I wish my work computer would let me read some of Mr Coren’s comments. It seems they contain rude words.
I am at home now.
What a bullying prick. I suggest the subs have a collection for Mr Coren, and either hire a lady of the night to help ease his frustrated rage, or a gentleman of dubious character to kick his jumped-up arse around the carpark. An unimportant, bleating twat.
Blimey, what happens when his wife burns his pizza? Or his kids forget to feed the cat? Though it’s infuriating when an editor person doesn’t ‘get’ the writing I don’t think he’ll win awards for tolerance. Rude fucker.
